"Data modeling techniques and methodologies are used to model data in a standard, consistent, predictable manner in order to manage it as a resource. ... Data models provide a framework for data to be used within information systems by providing specific definition and format" (Wikipedia).

In the context of business intelligence, we can think of data modeling a bit differently. "Data modeling is a way of mapping out and visualizing all the different places that software or an application stores information, and how these sources of data fit together and flow into one another" (Sisense). "It starts with the clear understanding of the business, its purposes, and how the data will be used to support the business" (Mythics). "The main principles to focus on are: 1) finding out what people want, 2) giving people what they want, and most importantly, 3) mak[ing] sure it is relevant for them" (Database Trends and Applications).
